The
Camphill-Idea
The Camphill idea developed out of the belief that each human being, with or
without disabilities, is a unique being with the right to a purposeful life
in freedom and dignity. It is the task of Camphill to create an environment
in which people with disabilities can learn to live with their limitations
rather than suffer from them and in which they can discover, develop and
realise their abilities to the fullest extent.
The Viennese physician, Dr. Karl Koenig, founded the first Camphill
Community in Scotland in 1939 .Today there are more than 70 such communities
in Europe, North and South America, in Africa and now the first one in Asia,
in Bangalore, India.
Bangalore, a city with around 7 million people, has hardly any residential
facilities for disabled adults. Older family members often find it extremely
difficult to give constant care to a mentally disabled person.
